Barack Obama Wins The Nobel Prize!

The Nobel Committee Got It  Just Right!

I first heard that Barack Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize when I woke up and clicked on the television.  From the outset the talking heads on Morning Joe were damning the President with faint praise.   The dominant theme of their half hearted and somewhat cynical comments was that he has only been in office for nine months; so what could he have possibly done to deserve such an honor?  I think the President’s radical departure from the warmongering policies of the Bushmen is reason enough for him to receive the Prize.

The Nobel Prize Committee thought so too.  Since they stated their reasoning clearly and concisely I’m puzzled as to what all of the confusion is about; except for the fact that the media is riddled with American Exceptionalists, and most Americans don’t place a high premium on world peace or international cooperation. First the committee cited the President’s commitment to ridding the world of nuclear weapons, then they eloquently stated rest of their case. “

“Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama’s initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.”

The statement  went on to say that these are principles that the Nobel Committee has stood for over the 108 years of its  existence.  One need only compare the Committee’s citations of the elements in the policy that is emerging as the “Obama Doctrine” on multi-lateral diplomacy, with the Bush administration’s contempt for international deliberative bodies such as the United Nations, and their flagrant disregard  for international law and the treaties that flow from that law – such as the invasion of Iraq and the un-signing of the International  Criminal court Treaty – in order to see why the Nobel Committee chose President Obama for this honor.

Yet even the hard news reporters on CNN allowed themselves to be sucked  into the cynical vibe emanating from the playa haters in the Republican camp – those verbose chicken  hawks who never saw a war they didn’t like…so long as they don’t have to actually fight in it. As people who soiled the nation’s honor by making torture of POW’s standard American policy, ignored international treaties on the environment, and started a war of choice that’s slaughtered thousands of innocence they have no shame about their crimes nor a life sustaining vision for the future.

Hence we should pay them no mind!   For these silly cynical talking heads cannot detract from the grandeur of this moment.  In winning the Nobel Prize for peace Barack Obama joins other black giants like Dr. Ralph Bunch, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Albert Luthuli, and et al. – men who shaped the history of the twentieth century and helped make our world a better place.  So let the racist warmongers wail and moan, but for those of us who cherish peace and promote international cooperation, this is a great day indeed!
