A Made in America Autocrat!

Dirty Donnie and the Brow Nosers
Senators Shamelessly Genuflect Before the Great Leader

It was nauseating watching the Republicans singing the praises of Fat Donald, assuming an embarrassing lips to posterior posture, while slapping themselves on the back for robbing the poor and showering the rich with even more money…making it rain bigtime for the super-rich plutocrats who own them, the billionaire donors who paid for the campaigns that put these pols in office. They are the new masters of Republican politics created by the Citizens United Decision of the US Supreme Court.

It was sad enough when we saw members of the cabinet cravenly kissing Trump’s rump in public, but this could be largely explained by the fact that their fate depends upon pleasing a vindictive president with a mercurial combustible temperament.  Yet for anyone who reveres the US Constitution, or just can’t stand suck ups, it was especially galling to witness members of the US Senate, a co-equal branch of government, the self-declared “greatest deliberative body in the world,” behave like lackeys in the Court of Ming the Merciless.

It was as if each Senator tried to outdo the other in crafting the most worshipful panegyric to the Great Leader.  They seemed terrified of the ever- present possibility of ritual crucifixion by the tweeting twit on Twitter, which could result in political death.  All one need to do in transcribing their remarks is substitute the salutation “Mr. President” with “Heil Hitler!” or “O Great Leader!” in order to recognize the dimensions of the crisis our democracy is presently facing from Donald Trump’s presidency. Sadly, congressional members of the GOP – Grand Opportunists Party – have entered into a Faustian bargain with an instable accidental President who the shrinks say is suffering from “Malignant Narcissism and Paranoia.” And who can say what the consequences will be?

The scene after the tax heist was, well, frightening, especially when one realizes that autocrats have been elected in other democratic societies to the enduring sorrow of its citizens. Most famously Weimar Germany, which was one of the freest and open democratic societies in the world, with a citizenry far better educated than the US electorate just now, when Hitler was elected. The foundations for a liberal enlightened German society such as Weimar had developed in Germany several decades before.

When the young Afro-American scholar WEB DuBois studied at the University of Berlin in the late 19th century, working on a PhD in economics, it was widely considered the world’s finest university. By the second decade of the 20th century Germany was publishing more books a year than any other country, which is evidence of widespread literacy.   And it was a leader in technology and Industry.

This was a society that had engaged in a protracted intergenerational debate about whether the soldier and statesman, or poet and philosopher represented the highest expression of citizenship. Whereas the billionaire business man is the most admired figure in America even if they are odious, stupid, amoral cretins.  Which does much to explain the ascendancy of Trump.

The Weimar Republic, which emerged in the aftermath of military defeat in the First World War spanning the years 1919-1933, represented a new expression of Democracy following the abdication of Wilhelm II, the last German Kaiser.  Weimar was a far freer and socially advanced society than the US was at the time. Weimar Germans were much more enlightened on race and gender issues, recreational use of drugs, and support for the arts. Afro-American Jazz music and dance – with its ethos of modernity and freedom performed at the “velocity of celebration” as Albert Murray called it – was in vogue, as is poignantly portrayed in the movie Swing Kids. This tolerant open-minded milieu is meticulously recreated in the brilliant Novel “Clifford’s Blues; by John A. Williams.

But as Edwin Black shows in his seminal book, “Hitler’s Debt to America,” white America’s Master Race theories, racist laws against black people and attitudes about euthanasia advocated by the US Eugenics movement were all adopted by the Third Reich that crushed the Weimar democracy. Alas, the twin disasters that befell Germany after World War I due to the war reparations imposed by the 1919 Versailles Treaty and the Wall street Crash of 1929, sparking a world -wide depression that created a sense of hopelessness among Germans, set the stage for the rise of Hitler.

Although white Americans love to portray Nazis as subhuman monsters who are the antithesis of themselves, after interviewing some of the top leaders placed on trial for war crimes at Nurnburg, the insightful Jewish philosopher Hanna Arendt disagreed, she found them quite ordinary people, and coined the term “the banality of evil” to describe their behavior. Dr. Arendt outraged many Americans, and Jews everywhere, by concluding there was nothing uniquely evil about the Germans.

The problem, she concluded, was blind submission to authority and predicted that there are people we all know who are capable of running concentration camps if ordered to do so by our government.  It is evident that there are many such personality types among Trump’s followers, and like those who blindly followed Hitler, they cite emotional despair caused by economic anxieties as the reason for their allegiance.

Americans have been protected from the rise of an autocrat by our Constitution, which gives Congress the power to check the excesses of the President through legislation or impeachment.  But what happens if the Congress fails to use that power?  This is the question now being raised by serious people as Trump threatens to fire Robert Mueller, the special prosecutor investigating whether members of the Trump campaign team collaborated with the Russians to steal the presidential election, which Trump has repeatedly called a hoax.

After Trump launched threats against128 foreign countries that voted against the US on Jerusalem, former CIA Director Robert O. Brennan remarked: “Trump expects blind loyalty and subservience from everyone—qualities usually found in narcissistic, vengeful autocrats.”  One of the main characteristics of autocratic regimes are fawning flunkies who say things like the once proud Republican Senators were  Trump after the tax heist. Longtime Utah Senator Orin Hatch, said Trump might well be “The greatest president in history!”

This kind of sycophantic praise does not inspire confidence that the Republican controlled Congress will checkmate the power of a President who wishes to turn the FBI into his personal Gestapo and unleash them on his political adversaries; despises the free press; the independent judiciary and congressional opposition.  All the institutions that guard our democracy. In view of this reality, the thoughtful observer is compelled to wonder if the difference between Trump, Hitler and Kim Jung UN, has less to do with philosophy than opportunity.

THE DONALD IS A PUNKASS CRY BABY!!!!!

donald-trump_0Herr Drumpf in a Manic Mood

AND MAYBE A COKE HEAD TOO!!!

There is no end to the myriad absurdities of the Trump Follies. Now Donnie Dimwit has the unmitigated gall to issue a statement expressing indignation at the speculation made by Dr. Howard Dean that he looked like a cocaine abuser during his debate with Hillary Clinton. Donnie’s campaign has issued an official statement accusing Dr. Dean of “crossing the line” of acceptable behavior. SAY WHAT???? If ever there was a clear case of the pot maligning the kettle: THIS IS IT!!!! Donald Trump has introduced a new level of rancorous discourse into presidential campaigning. He has not only “crossed” the line he has OBLITERATED IT!

Herr Drumft – our home grown fascist -is a typical bully; he can dish it out but he can’t take it. He is like the loud mouth bully who is quick to get in yo face sellin selling woff tickets but when you bitch slap him a little whiney cream puff steps out….like the character Terry Crews plays in that Ice Cube flick. Trump is not only a punk ass bully he could very well be a coke head too. Anybody who has ever been around people snorting lines of blow, or did some lines yourself knows they act just like Trump was behaving during the debate.

I speak as one who has investigated the effects of cocaine on the human brain both as a participant observer – a time honored anthropological methodology – and as an objective award winning reporter sifting through the scientific data on the issue of “recreational drug use” during the epidemic of cocaine abuse in New york during the 1990’s. See: This Bud’s For You” athttps://commentariesonthetimes.me/…/10/23/this-buds-for-you/

Hence from the point of view of a well-informed observer on the subject I think that Dr. Dean was right on the money in his description of Trump’s behavior and identifying it as the typical behavior of coke heads! He talks about the obvious sniffling, which in the absence of a serious cold is a dead giveaway for a “dirty nose.” But the behavioral traits pointed out by the Doctor are equally as telling: Delusions of grandeur, bombast and hubris. Donnie looked and acted just like some of the cokeheads I knew back in the day when I used to hang out with that crowd.

Furthermore, Trump fits the profile of one of the main categories of cocaine abusers: The go go business crowd! Blow was the drug of choice among the Wall Street gang, for a while even displacing alcohol, and it fueled the drive and ambitions of entrepreneurs with grandiose visions during the years when “The Donald” was becoming a big man among the affluent Manhattan swinging set.

He was a regular at Studio 54 during the 1970’s – back when Michael Jackson was black – a wild spot that was so popular with A-List celebrities that in order to enter mere commoners had to be chosen from the thongs of star gazers on the sidewalk clamoring to get in; a place where cocaine was consumed by the pound in bathroom stalls! And he loves models, MANY OF WHOM USED COKE TO KEEP THEIR WEIGHT DOWN AND TO GET UP FOR SHOOTS AFTER PARTYING ALL NIGHT!!!! So “The Donald” was immersed in a milieu in which snorting coke was common fare!

It was a cocaine Fueled Bachanaal!

Donnie Dimwit loves to brag about how he has never had a drink of an alcoholic beverage, and that he does not smoke. But in my experience, that’s just the type of personality that is likely to try cocaine especially if they want to be hip and is around people who are snorting lines. Back in the day cocaine was so expensive that it was mostly consumed by four categories of abusers: Gangsters and Players, Entertainers, rich freaks, and amped up businessmen who don’t know how to relax.

In a television report done on Trump’s lifestyle Ivana, his wife at the time, said “The Donald” never relaxes. In fact, they got a shot of him sitting by the pool in a suit and tie! That’s why he be up Tweeting dumb shit late at night that his surrogates must try to explain away the next day. Donnie Dimwit is a hot mess, a man driven by blind ambition and avarice, who also suffers from the maladies of megalomania and compulsive lying.

It is not at all difficult to believe that such a man – who according to his ghost writer for “The Art of the Deal” has an inferiority complex that makes him seek public adoration – has got a dirty nose. Hence “The Donald” doesn’t just look like a cocaine abuser to Dr. Dean….he looks like a coke head to me too, and I’ve known a few! We should DEMAND that his ass get DRUG TESTED!!!!

Donald Trump is a Dangerous Chump!

Populist Plutoctat or shameless Charlatan?

Yet the Republican Base loves him while the Elite Weeps

“Ye shall reap what ye sow!”

As a Yellow Dog Democrat I confess it is amusing to witness the hand wringing of the Republican establishment as Donald Trump blows up their chances of winning the presidency and possibly lose them the Senate to boot. Beyond that Trump’s hysterical anti-Muslim rants is endangering US national security by simultaneously aiding the recruitment efforts of ISIS, while making it harder for our Muslim allies to mobilize forces to attack ISIS on the ground with US backing.  Hence Donald the Clown is a liability for the GOP in domestic and foreign affairs. Yet they are only reaping what they sowed; this is why watching their public expressions of anxiety is so funny .

The establishment of the Grand Old Party aka “The Grand Obstructionist Party,” encouraged Trump’s outrageous racist antics when he fueled the so-called “Birther” movement that challenged Barack Obama’s bonafides as a native born American, thereby questioning his right to serve as President, an office he won in a national election fair and square….twice!   The Republican big wigs were mealy mouthed or remained mum on the subject because chump’s rancid rhetoric proved to be useful propaganda in their efforts to motivate the untutored, insecure, racist, and frightened white working and lower middle classes which make up the “Tea Party” trend in Republican politics and comprise the “party base.”

This is the demographic that was identified in a recent public health study as suffering the fastest growing death rate in the country.  The major causes of mortality among this group are indicative of stress filled lives lived on the edge of despair; sclerosis of the liver due to alcoholism, and drug abuse legal and illegal top the list. Hence these are desperate people looking for a savior in the post-industrial wastelands of America, and a strongman offering simple solutions to bewilderingly complex problems seems to be just what the doctor ordered.

Since nobody understands better than the plutocrats, the wealthy elite whose interests are promoted and protected by the Republican Party, that the aims and policies of their party are diametrically opposed to the economic interests of the “base,” they placate them with racism, xenophobia, and Jingoism.  All of which are personified in Donald Trump.

From the moment he announced a second run for the US presidency, the campaign waged by this pugnacious politically ignorant racist clown had all the characteristics of a fool’s errand. I thought he had no real chance at victory, but the campaign would cost him a fortune in financial losses and damage to his reputation…which was not that good to start with among many New Yorkers.   Before the campaign had hardly begun Trump’s dirty mouth and reckless diatribes cost him plenty in terms of public ridicule and lost business deals.

After his scathing comments about Mexican immigrants, accusing them of everything from being rapist and garden variety criminals to bringing infectious diseases into the US, he was roundly denounced and ridiculed in the media, and a train of corporations with whom he was doing business cut ties with the New York real estate developer and fled.   This includes television networks such as NBC and the Spanish Language TV network Univision, which aired his beauty pageant. And the government of California has voted to divest in any Trump enterprises they were doing business with.

However considering the fact that Trump has pledged to finance his own campaign, he could end up blowing a lot more dough.  For instance, the leading candidate in the race, Jeb Bush, has amassed a war chest of over a hundred Million dollars and there are millions more where that came from.  Although thus far Bush’s bread appears to have had no effect on his standing in the race, since the last time I checked he was below 5%.  It is no secret that the Republican establishment is behind Bush and wishes that Trump would disappear, as he is besmirching the party image and alienating Hispanic Americans – a constituency that party strategist with the Republican National Committee has identified as vital to a Republican victory in the 2016 presidential election.

After fiddling around for days after Trump’s scurrilous attacks on Mexicans Jeb Bush, whose wife Columba is Mexican, vociferously denounced Trumps anti-Mexican comments as “extraordinarily ugly” and assured us they are “not reflective of the Republican party.” But Trump chumped Jeb off by pointing out that his wife was Mexican and insinuated that he was pussy whipped and thus couldn’t be trusted to handle this issue objectively.

Terrified by Trump’s no-holds barred campaign style, in which mudslinging private attacks were considered fair tactics, the rest of the Republican presidential field maintained a silence that conjures up the oath of “Omerta” pledged by Mafia members. While Trump, pompous blowhard that he is, has stood firm and remained unrepentant, and despite the fact that those contenders who first stepped up to oppose him – like former Governor Rick Perry of Texas and Bobby Jindal of Louisiana – bit the dust, the rest of the Republican field have been forced to increasingly abandon their mealy mouth lawyerlike double talk and sound the alarm that a Trump victory in the primary elections would spell disaster for their Party.

They are speaking out despite fact that it will offend the racist sentiments of many in the Republican base; the beleaguered white working class whom they have courted with thinly disguised racist diatribes against President Obama.  However the party pros, the strategists like Karl Rove who understand the demographic profile of the entire US electorate, well know that the people who turn out and cheer Trump are a minority.

Hence they are worried to death about what the enigmatic, abrasive and fiercely independent Trump may do or say next.  It is fair to say that the old line Republican establishment is deeply worried about the damage Trump is doing to their brand every time he takes the stage.  His latest statements about Muslims have won the opprobrium of people around the world.

The Prime Ministers of America’s closest allies Britain and France have publicly denounced his views in extraordinary comments on US domestic politics.  Even the Mayor of London was moved to respond to a comment from Trump about the dangers posed by the Muslim population of London, that he would be much more afraid of running into Trump on the street during a visit to New York.

And as any thoughtful observer might imagine, Trump’s comments have flown like a steel balloon in the Muslim world, where they have been roundly denounced by students, scholars, politicians and of course Imams.  Tom Freedman, the erudite Foreign Affairs columnist for the New York Times, tells us in a column titled “You ain’t no American Bro”:

As for Trump, well, he may be a deal maker, but he’s no poker player ready for the Middle East five-card stud sharks. His xenophobic rhetoric and unrealistic, infantile threats of massive bombing make up the kind of simplistic hand you’d play in “Go Fish” — not in this high-stakes game. Beyond playing into ISIS’s hand by denigrating the U.S. presidency and our democratic ideals, Trump is doing real damage to America’s ability to lead a coalition, the only vehicle that can effectively address this problem.”

Despite the obvious damage this Trump chump is doing to his party and his country with his reckless rancid rhetoric, this megalomaniacal corporate martinet and amateur politician charges on oblivious to the concerns and protests of his fellow Republicans, as he trashes their dreams of capturing the Oval office with his malicious follies.  And it serves them right!

They made a Faustian Bargain by supporting or turning a deaf ear to the Tea Party and Trump’s racist attacks on President Obama, and now the Devil has come to claim their souls.  It is a poetic justice.  The Grand Obstructionist Party has just the candidate their dirty deeds deserve: A race baiting pugnacious chicken hawk and Vietnam era draft dodger, itching to squander more American blood and treasure in Middle East wars, raging through the Grand Obstructionist Party with the destructiveness of a bull in a China shop.  Indeed, they are reaping what they have sown!

On Donald the Clown!

The Loud mouthed Jackass who would be king

A Triumph Of Vulgar Materialism?

Recently one of the night time comedians put up pictures of American businessman Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jung Ill and asked: “which one of these guys has the strangest haircut?”  It was close; six on the one hand and a half dozen on the other, as my grandfather used to say.  Both of them are some silly looking buffoons!    But that’s not all these two mugs have in common: both are megalomaniacal autocrats; both are bullies; both live in vulgar opulence while many of their countrymen are engaged in a Darwinian struggle to put bread on the table; and both are enamored with celebrities in the entertainment world.  The biggest difference between them is that one is the head of a government and the other it’s not.  And we must do all that we can to keep it that way!

Who’s got the Silliest Haircut

The Donald                                                Kim Jung Ill

Although there is every reason to believe that the promise of a Trump Presidential campaign is a cynical hoax by the biggest hype artist since P.T. Barnum, with no higher purpose than self- aggrandizement, Donald’s cry for attention is further polluting the standing cesspool of Republican political rhetoric.  Trump is appealing to the oldest of American prejudices: nativism and racism.  By making an issue of the place of Barack Obama’s birth, thus calling into question the legitimacy of his Presidency, Donald the Clown is tapping into the racist rage of the clueless clowns on the Republican right; where 50% of  the Party believes that our President was born in Kenya!  This is dangerous stuff; trump is playing with dynamite.    Especially in the crude way that he is going about it.  Not only is it the sort of tasteless ignorant prattle that should disqualify anyone form serious consideration for the US presidency, it could incite unstable racist to violence.

The question we need to ask ourselves is what does it tell us about the character of contemporary American society that and odoriferous scoundrel and pugnacious poseur like Donald Trump could be considered presidential material?   A pompous plutocrat with no record of public service – in or out government – the only thing Donald trump has to run on is his fame and his fortune, which according to several savvy business observers is grossly exaggerated.

For instance, Trump filed a lawsuit against Timothy O’Brien, the author of “Trump Nation: The Art of Being the Donald, because the crack investigative reporter argued that “The Donald’ is not a multi-billionaire, in fact he’s not a billionaire at all.  O’Brien estimates that Trump’s fortune is somewhere between 150 and 250 thousand dollars.   When Trump could produce no documentary evidence to support his extravagant claims that he was worth around five billion, he said the difference between his verifiable evidence and his claims was based on the value of his brand!

By which he means the Trump name.  However many financial analyst argue that his name is in fact Trumps most valuable asset, because it allows him to shill for real business organizations by renting out his name to projects for a fee.  But even if his fortune was what he said it is, that does not qualify him to be President. The fact that many Americans find Trump’s assets, such as they are, to be sufficient qualifications to represent this nation in the most powerful office in the world, verifies the prophetic nature of Dr. WEB DuBois’ warning in 1903.

As the American industrial revolution matured and the new robber barons were dubbed “Captains of Industry,” they became the nation’s role models and worship of wealth became a civic religion.  Writing in a 1903 essay titled “On the Wings of Atlanta,” Dr. Dubois warned that the worship of wealth was sweeping aside all other values, and if that trend continued there would come a time when wealth would be considered the cure for everything in the minds of Americans.  Dr. Dubois’ prognosis about the moral corruption and confusion resulting from the mindless and obscene worship of money was echoed in the observations of his fellow Afro-American sociologist, and Howard University Dean, Kelly Miller.

Comparing the leadership styles of the great abolitionist Frederick Douglass, Miller observed: Douglass lived in a time of moral giants, when men revered the golden rule.  Washington lives in an age of Merchant princes, who are only concerned with the rule of gold.    Douglass had passed away earlier in 1895, before Washington gave his famous speech at “The World Exposition Of Cotton Growing States,” which DuBois called “The Atlanta Compromise” because Washington bartered away hard won Civil Rights for black Americans in exchange for them being able to fully participate in America’s economy and bring an end to the murderous reign of white terror directed against African Americans.  This single speech made Booker T. Washington Douglass’ successor as the spokesman for black Americans in the eyes of the white males that ruled the nation.

Although DuBois admired Washington’s devotion to uplifting the masses of blacks in America, who had only recently emerged from slavery, he was skeptical of Washington’s vision of the education of black Americans.  Hence in his seminal essay “Of Mr. Booker T. Washington and Others,” he observed that while Washington’s rise to power was the most spectacular development in southern history since the end of the Civil War, he attributed his success to being in step with the Zeitgeist- the spirit of his times.  In a nation of triumphant capitalism he observed: “Washington preaches a gospel of work and money.”  Dubois went on to observe: “If you teach a people to only make money you will produce money makers but not men!”

Alas, this is what all education is becoming, as corporate money increasingly shapes the research priorities of Americas great universities; lavishly funding their chosen academic programs while starving the humanities.  And many of our best and brightest students are no longer majoring in science and industrial engineering – which made the twentieth century the “American century” – but are concentrating in finance and flocking to Wall Street in the hope of making a fortune manipulating paper in a burlesque of an economy whose manufacturing base continues to shrink like a two dollar shirt!

In such an economic environment a morally handicapped vain braggart like Donald Trump becomes a role model to be widely emulated.  This is the consequence of the worship of personal wealth, and the preoccupation with “the rule of gold” Miller and Dubois  observed at the dawning of the twentieth century.  The trend they identified over a century ago – which I think is an indication of the onset of decadence – has intensified to the point that we are once again living in an era when Plutocracy – the domination of the nations’ affairs by the rich – is ascendant. The emergence of “Donald the Clown” as a presidential prospect – despite his shallow understanding of politics and macro-economics, plus an appalling lack of personal integrity – is irrefutable evidence that the triumph of vulgar materialism in America is complete!
